The gallery on this website contains work that I have exhibited as part of my final project at University, where I received a First Class Honours degree. The images are a collection of digital illustrations of Zimbabwean dollar notes which portray events between Mugabe and myself. I am a witness to Mugabe’s oppression of the country and have illustrated a handful of his unforgivable actions as ‘dictator’ using the diminishing value and increasing power of currency as a medium.
My approach to this work has been influenced by several artists including John Heartfield, Yinka Shonibare and Roshini Kempadoo. More specifically Heartfield’s photomontages of the Nazi period, and his methodology, highlight Hitler’s extreme actions within Germany, and echo my sentiments towards Mugabe's reign over Zimbabwe.
The media within Zimbabwe is government-controlled and foreign news reporters are restricted from entering the country. Any opposition to Mugabe’s government can become a prosecutable offence therefore freedom of speech comes at a high cost. I am lucky to have an opportunity to “speak out” against this tyrant.
